Mel Spice backs West End theatre boom

The West End managed to boom during last year's recession.

Record numbers of theatregoers attended plays, musicals and opera with box offices taking almost £505m, according to the Society of London Theatre (SOLT).

Former Spice Girl Melanie Chisholm, currently making her theatre debut in Willy Russell's Blood Brothers, has credited the West End's range of productions.

"Actors long to work on stage here in the West End, and people love to visit from all over the world," she said.

"It's a wonderful thing for London and for our economy".

In this extended interview with BBC London's Jane Witherspoon, she also confirmed a Spice Girls musical is to go ahead with the involvement of Mamma Mia! producer Judy Craymer.

The project needs to find writers. "We want a show that does our music proud", she said.
