4 November 1996

The debut album, Spice, is released and is awarded silver disc status on advance sales alone. Two million copies are sold in the first two weeks, and it goes on to become the biggest album of 1996 in the UK, and the biggest album of 1997 in the US, selling 10 million copies worldwide in less than seven months. Later updates put the UK sales figure around three million and worldwide sales at some 23 million.

3 November 1997
The album Spiceworld is released. It is their second number one album, and makes the Spice Girls the first British band since the Beatles to have two albums in the US chart at the same time. Spice and Spiceworld have amassed enough sales for one out of every two people in Britain to own a Spice Girls album.

November 1996
The Spice Girls attract a crowd of 500,000 when they switch on the Christmas lights in Oxford Street, London – bringing traffic in the West End to a standstill. It is one of several events staged by Simon Fuller to give them added publicity and boost their record sales.

At the same time, Simon Fuller starts to set up million pound sponsorship deals for the Spice Girls with Pepsi, Walkers, Impulse, Cadbury’s and Polaroid. They make the girls more famous than ever, as well as ensuring that their records are constantly being played on the radio, on TV and even in shopping centres and supermarkets.

Gordon Ramsay, Spice Girls and other stars rally to teen Annie's aid

A schoolgirl has persuaded big stars to help her recover from cancer.

Annie Dickenson, 16, was treated successfully for Hodgkin's lymphoma but doctors warned there was a chance of it returning.

She is on a £200-a-week organic diet to boost her immune system and wrote to celebs asking for raffle prizes to offset the cost.

Annie was amazed by the response from the stars - the Spice Girls sent a signed CD and tour programme, Rolling Stones' guitarist Ronnie Wood donated a painting of him and Rod Stewart, while chef Gordon Ramsay sent a cookbook.

Annie, who lives near Monmouth, Gwent, said yesterday: "Everyone has been brilliant."

Girl power out to spice up museum

FORGET the stuffed birds and old china - a South Yorkshire museum is hoping girl power will bring in the crowds.
The award-winning Rotherham Museum is taking visitors on a guided tour of one of the world's best known pop acts in its very latest exhibition.

Spice Girls fan Liz West claims to be one of the band's biggest fans - and has a massive collection of memorabilia to prove it. Some of her collection is now on show at the museum, including Geri Halliwell's outfits and shoes, Emma Bunton's infamous pink sequinned mini dress, gold discs and CDs.

Liz, 22, from Barnsley, has chased rare one-offs and other key memorabilia around the world before adding them to her collection.

She now has a reputation among sellers of Spice Girls memorabilia who often call her first before offering the collectibles to the public.

Liz said: "I began collecting Spice Girls memorabilia in 1996 when the girls first launched themselves onto the pop scene. My collection has moved from being mass produced items to one off rarities."

The latest addition to her collection - Ginger Spice's Union Jack Boots which she sported in 1997 film Spiceworld: The Movie - among the items on show.

Liz said: "We are lucky to have the boots on display as they only arrived at my house from Norway three days before the exhibition opened. They're an amazing collector's item and a rare gem in the Spice Girls world.

"The managers at Clifton Park Museum have shown great initiative in realising the value of an exhibition of pop memorabilia. It's not your traditional fare, but it is a great location for something like this."

Collections Officer, Richard Comley, said: "The Spice Girls exhibition really shows the contemporary direction the museum is going in and it's a fantastic display with some amazing items in it."

Wannabe climbs to number one (where it stays for seven weeks); the Spice Girls are the first all-female group to top the charts with their debut single. Wannabe stays at number one for seven weeks and goes on to sell four million copies. It reaches the top spot in 31 countries, making it the most successful debut single ever.

Wannabe steals the limelight from two ex Take That stars. The single knocks Gary Barlow's debut solo track Forever Love off the top spot, and it forces Robbie Williams to settle for a number two with his debut single, Freedom.

Victoria says: "We're as shocked as everyone else by the success of Wannabe. It doesn't put us under any pressure to follow it up. If it's the only number one we ever have, at least it proves what we're capable of. It's brilliant because it was the public who put it there, so it shows they enjoy what we do, but it's still just a paper fact about record sales. It's only one tiny step for us as a band. We've already recorded an album which we're incredibly proud of and that is what we're really anxious for people to get into."

Mel B Will Never Move Back to The UK

Spice Girls star Mel B says she will never give up her life in America to move back to the UK.

The former Dancing With The Stars contestant currently lives with her two children and husband Stephen Belafonte in Los Angeles, and insists she has no plans to move back to her homeland.

She says, "Things have definitely moved along, that's for sure. Living in America has been really fun and a really positive experience for me. I've been living in Los Angeles for nearly six years now and I consider that my home, even though I'm from Leeds. I love it, the sun shines every day."

Mel has carved out a successful TV career since finishing as runner-up on Dancing With the Stars last year.

After appearing as a contestant, the 33-year-old star returned to the programme as a backstage interviewer.

Mel can currently be seen co-hosting reality show The Singing Office -- which sees office workers compete in karaoke competitions -- with former *NSYNC star Joey Fatone.

POSH: SPICE GIRLS LOOKED LIKE DRAG QUEENS

VICTORIA Beckham says she cringes when she looks back at the outfits the Spice Girls used to wear. The former Spice added that the girls, Geri in particular, looked like a group of drag queens. While looking at a picture of the group at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards, she told Allure: "Good God. This is the worst we ever looked. We looked like five men dressed as women.""Can you imagine getting any more make-up on your face? "Look at Geri - what does she look like? We all joke about this now, actually. You know, fashion changes."The style icon added: "Rather than ever looking back at my clothes and cringing, I look back at the make-up and cringe. "It looks like someone beat me up and pushed me onto the stage. None of the clothes were really that fabulous in the Spice Girls, you know."

Eva Longoria goes for Posh-bob look

New York , July 16 (ANI): Ever since Victoria Beckham has shifted base to America , she seems to have inspired a lot many Hollywood celebrities to go for the bob look, and the latest to crop her locks to adopt the Beckham bob is Eva Longoria Parker.

A self-confessed fan of flowing curls, the “Desperate Housewives” appeared with her new look on July 14, during a brunch with husband Tony Parker in Beverly Hills, Calif.

“I love how modern day stars have owned the look. They have re-invented it and made it their own. It’’s an ever changing recreation of the bob,” The New York Daily News quoted legendary stylist Edward Tricomi, co-owner of the Warren Tricomi salon at The Plaza, as saying.

Celebrity stylist Ken Paves, who works with the actress said that though Longoria cut her hair for her role as Gaby on the hit show, but she “was ready for a change,” and it seems that her new hair-do would quickly make waves.

The other Posh-inspired celebrities to chop off the crop include the stylish Spice Girls good-pal Katie Holmes, who went to the short hair look last year.

Paris Hilton showed off her newly shorn locks a month after Posh relocated to Los Angeles and soon Anne Hathaway, Gwyneth Paltrow, Hayden Panettiere and other celebs followed suit.

Fabrice Gili, artistic director for Frederic Fekkai said that when Beckham moved to America , she had a “very polished, very different look from other celebrities. She definitely inspired a lot of stars to do something with their hair.” (ANI)

Spice up your ... wardrobe

It looks like former Posh Spice, Victoria Beckham, has finally woken up and realised what the rest of us have been thinking all along - the Spice Girls looked like drag queens!

In a recent interview she was shown a photo of the fab five all frocked out back in their hey-day.

Apparently the old pic was extremely cringe-worthy to Vic, the now-fashionista.

"Good God! This is the worst we ever looked. We looked like five men dressed as women!"

Apparently it wasn't just their choice of wardrobe that copped it from Vic either.

"Can you imagine getting any more make-up on your face? ... It looks like someone beat me up and pushed me onto the stage."

Prince Charles Wants The Spice Girls

The Spice Girls have mentioned many times that they will not reunite again, but what if it’s for the Prince?

Prince Charles’ 60th birthday is coming up and the Spice Girls have reportedly been asked to be one of the performers. Prince Charles has also expressed interest in Kylie Minogue, Tom Jones and Status Quo to perform at his b-day bash.

An ITV source told the Daily Express: "Prince Charles' 60th is going to be a huge party.

"It will be done with all the style expected for a royal occasion, but with a certain sense of humor.

"We're certainly hoping to get the Spice Girls back together. It's hoped they will do it because it will be a lot of fun. Other acts Charles likes include Status Quo, Tom Jones and even Kylie so we're trying to get them to sign up.

"We're going to pull out all the stops to make it a right royal and very British extravaganza."?

Highly doubtful the girls will reunite even if it’s for the Prince. The girls made it very clear that after the tour they would not reunite once again.

A Spice Girls Musical??

Just bought New! Magazine and found an article relating to a possibly Spice Girls Musical, something Geri Halliwell is interested in, being in the pipeline! Scanned pic below:

Posh braves scary flight

Victoria Beckham was involved in a terrifying plane incident.

The former Spice Girls singer was flying to London from Los Angeles with two of her children - five-year-old Romeo and three-year-old Cruz- when a bird flew into one of the plane's engines as it taxied down the runway.

The pilot had to quickly apply the brakes, bringing the aircraft to a screeching halt.

A passenger onboard the flight told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "It was really scary when the pilot suddenly slammed on the breaks. We had no idea what was happening and you immediately fear the worst.

"Young children were crying and for a moment I feared it was going to turn into a scene from a disaster movie."

Fire crews quickly arrived on the scene to douse the engines with foam. Victoria and her sons were ferried back to the airport separately from the other passengers to give her time to change out of the flight pyjamas she
was wearing.

The source added: "I was sitting a few rows back from Victoria and her sons, who were at the front of the plane. Victoria wasn't wearing any make-up and had changed into the pyjamas provided by the airline."

Her husband David and their eldest son, nine-year-old Brooklyn, were not on the flight.

Mel B's children wish

Mel B "definitely" wants children with husband Stephen Belafonte. The former Spice Girls star - who has a nine-year-old daughter Phoenix with ex-husband Jimmy Gulzar and a 15-month-old daughter Angel with actor Eddie Murphy - is keen to expand her family even further with movie producer Stephen.

She said: "Yeah, we definitely want children. Not just yet - I think in a few years, definitely." Mel also revealed she thinks the secret to a happy marriage is being good friends with your spouse.

She added to Britain's Star magazine: "I think marriage agrees with me - I'm happy all the time! We're the best of friends, which I think is one of the most important things in a successful marriage." However, Mel said Stephen's surprise present for their one-year wedding anniversary backfired when she injured herself.

She said: "You know what, my husband organised a helicopter and this beautiful restaurant, but I actually got a trapped nerve in my hip, so I ended up staying and relaxing at the hotel! But we celebrated the next day with the helicopter and the lovely restaurant."
