While David Beckham was watched by millions around the world at the Bird's Nest stadium, Victoria was allegedly recovering in France after she was left too shaken to fly to China.
The former Spice Girl reportedly told paramedics she "feared for her life" after David accidentally drove their Black BMW coupe into a concrete security barrier on the motorway.
The couple were driving to Nice airport from their home in Bargemon, near the French Riviera, when the crash happened, it was claimed.
Victoria Beckham missed her husband's starring role in London's Olympic handover in Beijing after the couple were involved in a car crash, French news agencies have claimed.
David was photographed embracing a tearful Victoria before heading to the departure lounge to catch his flight. Neither was injured.
The couple had been on holiday with three sons Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz but were planning to fly to Beijing after leaving their children with a nanny.
The accident happened just a few kilometeres from their home. One side of the vehicle was dented, the windscreen was cracked. No other cars were involved.
David later flew out to China, where he appeared alongside Leona Lewis and Jimmy Page in the eight-minute centrepiece to officially start the countdown to the 2012 games in London.
But a spokesman for the footballer denied the reports, saying: "David was saying goodbye [to Victoria] at the airport. The damage occurred days ago."
