Another This Time review from MSN Music Canada

3/5 Stars

The sporty member of the Spice Girls certainly knows how to craft a catchy hook, as she does right out of the box on Understand. It's a great song about love and longing, and Melanie C — a bestselling U.K. artist in her own right — sounds great. She's engaged and emotive, a far cry from the bubblegum gloss of her famous band. Chisholm, who co-writes these tunes, follows with another great tune, What If I Stay, a winning combination of moody synthesizer and strings that starts slow and hushed, and moves into harmonica-laced soft pop (courtesy of Tchad Blake).

Unfortunately, the remainder of the album is pretty enough, with lots of sweeping strings and layers of vocals (This Time, Forever Again, Your Mistake), but fails to maintain the same momentum. She also falls into the terribly trite and clichéd with The Moment You Believe, a song that wouldn't be out of place at a Celine Dion concert or at the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. "I'm ready now to start a new beginning/With all my hopes and all my dreams/And I know the stars will shine for you and for me," she trills with a backing of equally grand instrumentation. Egad. Still, it's a gorgeously produced album, and aside from that misstep, Melanie C seems to be singing from the heart most of the time. She's talented, Melanie C, and not to be written off as merely another Spice Girl. Besides, she includes a bonus track version of I Want Candy that gives her a bit of a rock chick edge.
