Spoof shakespearean musical on Posh and Becks

COMEDY: The show by Gary Cooke will be based on the lives of David and Victoria Beckham

The epic lives of Posh and Becks are getting the I, Keano treatment in a comic musical, opening in Dublin in January.

Gary Cooke, one of the stars of Apres Match and I, Keano, has created a satirical show about the Beckhams.

The play, co-written by Malachy McKenna and Jody Trehy, is set in Shakespeare's time but the language is modern and follows a certain celebrity footballer and his Wag called Posheria.

Based on the life of Golden Balls, Cooke said the musical will feature characters resembling The Spice Girls, Alex Ferguson and Rebecca Loos, who all have a part to play in the life of Macbecks.

Cooke said that the plot doesn't stick rigidly to Macbeth, but uses references from other plays by the Bard.

"It's ultimately a story about star-crossed lovers, an ambitious wife and a patrician -- King Lear, aka Alex Ferguson," he explained.

A strong theme in the play details Lady Macbeck's voracious ambition, which means her husband sacrifices his career so that she can pursue her dreams.

Cooke said this was one aspect he particularly wanted to explore.

"There was always the suggestion that Victoria was a Lady Macbeth kind of character," he said. "That she is some sort of driving force behind David."

The show stars actors Paul Reid as Macbecks with Kelly Gough as Poshoria.

The show is due to open in the Olympia on January 14 and will run for five weeks in Dublin and Cork.
