Melanie C announces she is to play Blood Brothers’ Mrs Johnstone at the Liverpool Empire

Blood Brothers, Mel C

MELANIE C will play Mrs Johnstone in Blood Brothers at the Liverpool Empire.

The November shows will be the only performances outside the West End for the 36-year-old former Spice Girl.

Today’s news marked the second Liverpool “homecoming” due this autumn following Sex In The City star Kim Cattrall’s announcement she is to appear as Cleopatra at the Playhouse.

Melanie said: “I had such an incredible time playing the role of Mrs Johnstone in the West End.

“I am so excited to have the opportunity to play her again in my home town at the Empire.”

The singer won acclaim for her performance as Willy Russell’s musical matriarch after joining the cast of the London show in October last year.

She was shortlisted for a prestigious Olivier Award for best actress in a musical or entertainment category.

Mrs Johnstone marked the mum-of-one’s stage debut following a successful recording career with The Spice Girls and as a solo artist.

Bill Kenwright, who is behind the show at London’s Phoenix theatre and is also bringing the production to the Empire from November 8-20, said: “From the second Melanie walked into my office, I knew she would make a great Mrs J. The reality exceeded the expectation and I instantly felt on her opening night in London she must play Blood Brothers in Liverpool.

“It is typical of her that she agreed instantly to do a two-week autumn stint in her home town.

“She is a real star and a credit to her city.”

Blood Brothers has already played at the Empire once this year, when Lyn Paul took the role of musicals’ most famous charlady in the production last month.

Tickets for Blood Brothers starring Melanie C go on sale on Monday May 24, priced at £16-£37.50.
